Machiko Higuchi is a middle aged woman working in the municipal office of a small town Tsuhara. She is alone and lives in solitude. Suddenly the quiet town becomes disturbed when people begin spotting a strange monster. Spooked by the rumor, the mayor assembles the residents to hunt the monster. Amidst the commotion, Machiko hears a beautiful sound of three stringed zither, shamisen. Drawn by the enchanting plucked melody, she peeks into darkness, where she finds a large monster hiding.
