During the investigation of the treasures of Agra, Holmes and Watson recall another case that Holmes had investigated before. The King of Bohemia comes to Holmes under a false name, who behaves at first arrogantly, and then plaintively asks to help him. At one time, the king, then still the crown prince, had a love affair with the famous adventurer Irene Adler, took a picture with her and signed the photo as a keepsake. Now he is going to get married and wants to avoid a scandal, as, according to him, Irene threatens to send the bride a photo on the day when the engagement will be announced. Sherlock Holmes pretends to be wounded and ends up in Irene's house, where, together with Dr. Watson, he imitates a fire. However, although Holmes finds out, according to his plan, where the photograph is hidden, he does not steal it. Irene Adler marries Norton's lawyer (Holmes unexpectedly witnesses at her wedding) and leaves, and the king and Sherlock Holmes receive her another photo card and a letter promising not to divulge her relationship with the king. Since then, a portrait of Irene Adler has been standing in Holmes's room as a reminder of the rare failure of the great detective.
