Today's global economy is an evolution of how man has operated for centuries. Humans largely existed through subsistence in olden days, producing what they needed for their own survival. As time progressed, surplus goods were traded between neighbors, which allowed each to specialize in producing what he did best with the result being greater prosperity as more goods were produced and traded. With the advent of cheap transportation, this trade expanded to the entire globe, where goods are now not traded, but purchased and sold, with currencies allowing trade to occur between multiple peoples. These items traded not only includes consumer goods, but goods used by producers to make their output more efficient. Wars and nationalistic trade barriers are among the items that restrict free world trade.
