SpongeBob is afraid of Halloween, so Patrick encourages him to take a light-hearted approach to the holiday instead, and to find what is scary funny. The Flying Dutchman doesn't like this, so he takes SpongeBob and Patrick to his ship and tries to scare the former. It doesn't work, so he takes the souls of SpongeBob's friends and imprisons them in cages to scare them. When SpongeBob realizes this, he's properly scared, but he gets the marionette from Sandy's treedome and goes back up to the Flying Dutchman's ship to save them. When he arrives, his initial plan fails, but the Dutchman goes into SpongeBob's brain and ends up being scared himself. The Dutchman's ship disappears, SpongeBob's friends are saved and they all decide that what's scary is just scary.
