A farmer and his wife are dismayed to learn from Dr. Summers, the veterinarian, that what ails their old dog Shep is nothing more than old age and that the most humane thing to do for Shep is to put him down. As the farmer prepares for Shep's shooting, mostly deciding where the deed should be done and where Shep should be buried, he and a barely able to walk Shep take a stroll around the farm property while the farmer reminisces to Shep about the useful things he has done to help with the farm work but more importantly what a good friend Shep has been all these years. As the farmer and Shep reach their final destination, the farmer's wife hears a gunshot ring out in the distance.
