The Moscow opera-search officer Zharov arrives in the provincial town of Belorechesk to investigate the mass disappearance of city residents on the instructions of the leadership. Over the past six months, 25 people disappeared without a trace, and the number of missing people is growing every day. Locals associate mysterious events with the fall of a meteorite near the old mines. The head of the police department Starovoitov presents Zharov to the local operatives, Grishin and Tolyan, with whom he is to conduct an investigation. Grishin is an experienced operative who knows well the inhabitants of the city and to whom they often turn for help, and not at all for free. Tolyan - a young opera, a former commando, who is just beginning his work in the police.
