Dr. Jack and Alice Overton have been married for ten years. While they still love the other, they are increasingly quarreling and take each other for granted, arguably having fallen out of love with the other without really realizing it. It is because they haven't realized they are out of love that they pretend in the routines of their marriage while they somewhat resist the somewhat forbidden advances apiece of a younger, adoring suitor/suitress. A specific incident finally brings to the surface their feelings for the other, they both deciding the most practical course of action being divorce, something that neither had even thought about before that moment. In doing so, each is free to pursue those advances, or the love of anyone else each chooses. But in bringing their feelings and associated behaviors and actions to the surface, they may view their relationship in yet another light.
