Mrs. Mulligan, although in poor circumstances, taken the child of her neighbor, who has just passed into another world, to live with her. Dolly becomes quite chummy with Tom, one of Mrs. Mulligan's sons, and during the child's saddest hours Tom comforts her. Tom proposes that Dotty write a letter to her mother in heaven asking her to come back. The letter is given to the mailman who delivers it to the post office superintendent. This superintendent, just having lost his own daughter, persuades his wife to adopt Dotty. The pathetic scene that takes place between the superintendent's wife and the child is one mothers will never forget.
