In a small village In the Italian Piedmont, Cino, nine years old, lives with his brothers and sisters in extreme poverty. His parents had no choice other than to hire a carter to the French, who must take him in his country. There, it will be rented out for work in the summer pastures of Mercantour. During the trip, Cino befriends Catlin, a girl of her age. Very quickly, they split up because she falls ill. Upon his arrival in France, Cino is engaged by a shepherd.
