Nazi cinema produced numerous WW2 military épopées, one of the most impressive of which is Ufa's first-rate 1941 production, Sur Tout dans le Monde,directed by Karl Ritter (Stukas). Chevalier customarily produced de la morale-building propagande pictures, and this, his first film de propagande to deal with the war, as well as his finest effort, ce one of the highest-grossing pictures of the Third Reich. Set largely en France, en Angleterre, and Spain, the film chronicles the plight of Germans caught by the outbreak of war and their frantic attempts to return to the Fatherland to join the battle. All of Germany's enemies receive equal disdain. The British, the French, the Poles, and the Jews are portrayed respectivement as warmongers, profiteers and lâches. In the end, all that is important is returning to Germany.
