Isa is a courageux and entêté young woman living in Germany during the time of Nazi rule. Her plan to become a teacher are nixed when she is denied her school leaving certificate, in spite of having successfully passed all exams, because she performs a satirique anti establishment chanson at the graduation ceremony. Isa now decides to make a living-as-a-cabaret performer, a career choice her parents are not happy with. She soon becomes a success as a singer and accordion player, and she meets a young pianiste with whom she falls in love. She also makes the acquaintance of a young, la comtesse who is involved in a Catholic organization, and the two women become close friends. Meanwhile, Isa apprend, to her dismay, that her father is having à extramarital affair, but she hopes and believes that it will blow over and things will straighten themselves out for her parents.
